Now Open for Applications: Clean Air Centers Pilot Program (AB 836)
The San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District (Valley Air District) is pleased to announce the opening of the Clean Air Centers Pilot Program, which provides funding to purchase portable room filtration devices to create temporary clean air shelters that can provide respite from wildfire and other smoke events for the vulnerable communities of the Valley when smoke events occur.
Solicitation for applications will be open from May 1, 2022 – May 31, 2022. Program Guidelines and Application Packets may be accessed here.
Background
As California’s wildfire seasons have intensified and lengthened over the course of recent years, an increasing number of Californians have been impacted by the negative health effects of exposure to wildfire smoke. The passage of AB 836 (Wicks) in 2019 allocated a total of $5 million in funding to create a statewide network of clean air centers where Californians who are being impacted by wildfire smoke may seek respite. This District held a workshop to provide Clean Air Centers Pilot Program information to prospective applicants located within the Valley Air District boundaries.
Please note that the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and South Coast Air Quality Management Districts are implementing the Clean Air Centers Program for their respective regions and the California Air Pollution Control Officers Association is implementing the program for all other regions of the state. For information regarding Clean Air Centers in regions outside of the San Joaquin Valley, please contact the appropriate entity for that area.
