June, 2022 Newsletter

It’s not a matter of “if” but “when” the transition to EV transport will happen. In this newsletter we discuss the latest advancements in electric transportation as well as the story of electric vehicles.

"Our quest is not about reducing emissions, but about eliminating emissions."

— Port of Long Beach Executive Director Mario Cordero

The History of Electric Vehicles

Looking at the rate of transformation during the ACT Expo 2022, we decided to take a time machine and show you how our industry has transformed in the last 100 years.

While it may seem EV technology has erupted in the market force overnight due to growing sustainability incentives, the reality is that automotive experts have been developing alternative fuel vehicles since its possibility first came to fruition.

The first models were launched in Hungary, The Netherlands and the United States in the 1800’s - their success largely due to its small scale and affordability over diesel.

Over the years the vehicles became popular with urban residents due to efficiency and short range travel.

By the 1900’s an increase in charging locations contributed to rising demand. For example, Ferdinand Porsche, founder of the sports car company, developed an electric car called the P1 in 1898 as shown below. By the 1970’s EV technology reached past the boundaries of Earth and even supported NASA’S Lunar missions!

The possibilities of EV technology was echoed by Thomas Edison, one of the world’s most prolific inventors, - who according to the Wired thought electric vehicles were the superior technology and even partnered with Henry Ford to explore options for a low-cost electric car!

As we can see there are very few limitations to human imagination and with increased advancement, community effort and global awareness we can eventually reach a future where green transportation is the norm.

Modern Industrial Gains & Energy Savings

Why should you care about the future, today? How incentives and technology have propelled the evolution of EV and why.

Today, EV battery storage technology has advanced past solely energizing local urban populations with capabilities to support heavy duty freight vehicles such as Class 8 trucks - the heaviest heavy duty truck to date in the United States!

But how does this support overall industrial and sustainable advancements? Well, large energy savings, particularly in expensive and non-renewable fossil fuels industries are imported from outside the United States making costs extremely high. The increased dependency on foreign oil as well as soaring prices & gasoline shortages even lead to Congress passing the Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Research, Development and Demonstration Act of 1979 - a major turning point for our EV industry!

By continued investment and state incentives to transition towards green automobility, we can reduce CO2 emissions and create new employment opportunities in infrastructure, development and technology. The future of EV generation is largely dependent on storage capacity and accessibility of delivery systems. This is why WattEV modeled itself to accommodate the needs of the future.

Nowadays - ACT Expo takeaways

The Advanced Clean Transportation Expo is North America's largest forum for automotive industry professionals to explore the latest vehicles, fuels and technology at their disposal. We spent several days there and want to share our CEO`s key takeaway:

“This was WattEV’s second year at ACT expo and it turned out to be a huge succeess!

With over 8500 attendees from the industry including truck manufacturers, EVSE suppliers, shippers, utilities, investors, government representatives and media outlets, it’s clear interest in zero emissions transport is accelerating at an unprecedented rate

We got to spend time with many industry professionals as well as take part in a number of panels and announcements and its clear that WattEV’s solution is a necessary step towards making ZE transport a reality to the masses.”

Why Truck-as-a-Service?

Electric trucks are expensive! With a majority of the transportation industry being made up of owner operators with second hand trucks, many drivers cannot afford the high capital cost to transition to EV or want to deal with the unknowns in terms of where to charge, range, maintenance etc. At WattEV we saw this as an opportunity with are all inclusive Truck-as-a-Service. Through our platform, owner operators and carriers have access to out fleet of electric trucks without the unknowns and capital costs in an all inclusive lease that includes the vehicle, maintenance, and charging. Our charging depots as strategically located off major trucking corridors and near distribution centers creating an “Electric Highway” to support heavy duty EV transport.

Whether you own your own fleet or are looking to transition today, utilise our private fleet available for lease on subscription and reduce your costs with WattEV!
